2026 Race Recap & Result
With 15 knots of breeze, white caps across the course, and a crisp 20.5°C, the stage was set for a lively day on the water.
Eight boats made their way to the start on a grey and rather brisk morning, arriving from Aberdeen, Kellett Island, and Sai Kung. The start line off Shek O was tightly contested, with little room given as crews jostled for position.
Fairmile made an excellent start, surging ahead of the fleet and setting a strong pace towards Sung Kong Island. However, an early setback saw her relinquish the lead, allowing Saphira to close the gap and take command. In increasingly choppy conditions, crews were kept busy on deck, holding firm as the fleet pressed on.
Goddess maintained close contact with Saphira, demonstrating strong teamwork and a well-coordinated crew. Close behind, Fly By Wire, one of the faster boats in the COA fleet, continued to apply pressure. Despite losing her early advantage, Fairmile recovered well to cross the line in fourth position.
Orrin Blue, crewed by a highly experienced team, once again delivered a composed and consistent performance, handling the conditions with confidence despite sailing with just three on board. Burragah, starting last, made impressive progress through the fleet, sailing steadily to secure a competitive corrected time.
Further back, Harmony and PT2 enjoyed a spirited battle, pushing each other all the way to the finish in a closely fought contest.
Please refer to the final results below, taking into account the respective handicaps.
The race was followed by an evening of excellent food and convivial company. The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club once again provided a superb spread for all dinner guests, with a barbecue accompanied by a selection of salads that catered equally well to meat lovers and vegetarians alike.
Sailors were joined by family and friends, gathering to celebrate a cheerful evening in a truly pristine setting. As the night drew on, crews gradually returned to their boats or made their way home. Those who remained aboard will no doubt remember the clear, starry sky and the calm, quiet surroundings — a rare and welcome contrast to the bustle of Hong Kong, and a reminder of the simple pleasures of life at sea.

What is the Clearwater Bay BBQ Rally?
The COA Clearwater Bay BBQ Rally is a highlight of the association’s calendar, combining an engaging coastal race with a relaxed and sociable overnight stay.
Sailed under the PHS system, the rally begins off Shek O and takes competitors on a scenic course of approximately 16 nautical miles through the eastern waters of Hong Kong. Along the way, crews navigate a series of virtual marks and gates, utilising modern GPS tracking to complete the course before finishing near the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Marina.
The format blends tactical racing with accessibility, as the fleet sets off together and crews must carefully manage their course, timing, and strategy to achieve the best corrected result. Strategic elements along the course ensure a dynamic and competitive race across a range of conditions.
Following the race, crews are welcomed ashore for a barbecue dinner at the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, providing the perfect opportunity to unwind, share stories from the day’s sailing, and enjoy an evening in one of Hong Kong’s most picturesque settings. Participants may remain overnight at the marina, making the event as much a social gathering as it is a sporting challenge.
Blending competitive sailing, modern race management, and a vibrant social atmosphere, the Clearwater Bay BBQ Rally remains a firm favourite among COA sailors.
