COA Championship Series 2009/10
Written by Robert Berkley
The COA Championship Series is open to COA members and is decided from the results obtained from competing in a selection of races throughout the racing year.
The COA Championship Series has been updated for 2009/2010 and will comprise of the following between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010:
- Combined race results from each COA-organised Macau Race.
- The ABC Opening Regatta.
- DBYC Middle Island Regatta.
- The HHYC Port Shelter Regatta.
- The RHKYC China Coast Regatta.
- The RHKYC Round the Island Race.
The COA Championship Series will be contested under IRC and HKPN. Boats with IRC ratings will be entered for the IRC division unless they request to enter the HKPN division before the start of the ABC Opening Regatta 2009. There is no need to register for the COA Championship Series; by participation your results will automatically count. There will also be a sub-series for best multi-hull (HKPN).
Scoring is based on the Cox-Sprague (modified) Scoring System using published results for each race/regatta. For regatta’s, overall results for each division (not individual races) will be used. Scores will be awarded for the division that a boat races in. For example, HKPN Div A and HKPN Div B will be scored as separate races. Note that not all events will have HKPN and IRC divisions and some qualifying events may run concurrently.
The Cox-Sprague Scoring System allocates more points to races with a greater number of entrants, acknowledging that it is more difficult to win a race with 20 entrants than with 3. For example, in a division of 14 boats, finishing 3rd would earn 84 points. In a smaller division with only 6 entrants, finishing 3rd would earn 76 points.
The scoring system will be modified by giving Macau Races a weighting of 1.25 and the RHKYC RTI Race a weighting of 0.75. With one Macau Race (combined results) able to be discarded, the best scores from the events listed above will determine the winners of the COA Championship Series 2009/2010.
